Depression - Disease or mood? | Dr. Angeliki Niarchou

Depression, the scourge of the age that makes the functioning of people more and more difficult, significantly reducing the quality of everyday life of those who experience it. But what is the reality about the concept of "Depression" and how could it be dealt with radically?

First of all, what I understand as a therapist but also as a person, taking into account the mental states of the treated, their family environment, their work environment, my personal experiences, scientific knowledge and literature, I came to the conclusion that depression likely to is a mental state / mood, such as anger, bad mood, etc.

I mention this because in our mood we are vulnerable to most people because these are constituents of our existence, deriving from the inherent instinct of survival. What can be acquired is classified in the category of individual's experiences and ultimately affects the outcome. Whether it will eventually show depression, anger, and so on.

Having "depression" does not mean that he is different from everyone else. Instead, they are all likely to display it at a given time as they would simply show a mental mood.

The concept of disease includes signs of pathology and a specific incidence of symptoms. In order to truly substantiate the suggestion that Depression is a disease, it should present these characteristics with a permanent dysfunction in the neurotransmitters of the brain, namely Serotonin. In this case, we could rightly talk about a disease, otherwise we can talk about a mental state.

In fact, these limits separating the delicate balance of illness from bad mood can be distinguished only by special therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists. In general and on the basis of research, the therapeutic approach to psychotherapy is considered necessary in both cases, while medication or herbal therapy (if appropriate for the sufferer) is additionally taken if the depressive disorder lies at the level of the disease and only if deemed necessary.

In conclusion, depression could be in the category of mental moods and less in the category of diseases because it is a condition that combining inherent characteristics with acquired experiences at a given moment can lead to an X result of mood for any person. That is why it would be ideal to ask for help from the specialist as soon as we need it.

Having "depression" does not mean that he is different from everyone else. Instead, they are all likely to display it at a given time as they would simply show a mental mood. The difference is that like any other mood exceeds normal in frequency and intensity and creates dysfunction so depression deserves attention and immediate treatment.
